Dao Yin

Dao Yin is a series of movements designed to improve the circulation of physical energy around the body. Because of the harsh living conditions in China several hundred years ago, people needed something practical to help their lives. Very often, the result of this difficult environment was arthritis and rheumatism in the joints and bones. These disorders signify stagnancy. The vital energy cannot flow freely around the body. The ancient Chinese tried to find ways to alleviate this stagnancy of energy. They found that the exercises not only improved such disorders but also improved their overall health. This is what started the Taoist’s search for immortality or at least longevity.

Lao Tzu

People are soft and supple when living
But stiff and hard when dead

Grass and trees are pliant and fragile when living
But dried and shrivelled when dead

Therefore the hard and strong are the comrades of death
The soft and supple are the comrades of life
